Legendary American Drag Boat Racer

I started drag boat racing in 1977 with carbureted 427 Chevy in Hondo flatbottom in Middle Eliminator class in the American Drag Boat Association. Added aluminum heads & Hilborn fuel injection to BBC, & ran Super Stock/Super Modified in 1979-1980 in the American Drag Boat Association(ADBA) & Southern Drag Boat Association(SDBA). Teamed up with a partner(Dale Bea) in 1981 & built a 540" BBC to run Unblown Gas Flatbottom class with the Hondo flatbottom aptly named Tuff Toy. Ran fuel injected big block Chevy 1981-1982 seasons, then purchased aluminum 557" Arias Hemi & ran unblown gas flat class in Hondo flatbottom 1983 season. Purchased new Cole TR4 flatbottom for the Unblown Gas Flat class in 1984 with fuel injected Arias Hemi power. Crashed the Cole TR4 at the first race of 1985 season with updated 565" Arias Hemi power. Replaced the Cole TR4 with a Mako flatbottom in fall of 1985 running the Arias 565" hemi. Set mph records in Unblown Gas Flatbottom with the Mako/Arias combo in the 1986 season winning the SDBA High Points Championship in Unblown Gas Flatbottom. Class changes in 1987 required us to change the 565 ci Arias combination to a 500 ci class format called Pro Gas Flatbottom. We debuted a new Tuff Toy 1987 Mako flatbottom for the Pro Gas Flatbottom wars in Pro Gas Flatbottom. We set numerous mph & ET records with the Mako/Arias combination in 1987 winning the High Points Championship in ADBA & SDBA. We set mph & ET records thru out the 1988 & 1989 seasons, with another SDBA High Points Championship in SDBA in 1989. Dale & I sold the Tuff Toy Mako at the end of the 1989 season. I drove a Blown Alcohol Flatbottom(BAF) for a friend Steve Everett out of Waco, Tx the 1993 season in ADBA, SDBA & MSDBA Associations. We set a mph record in the MSDBA & took runner up in High Points Championship the 1993 season. At the end of the 1993 season I quit driving the BAF for Steve, & purchased a Canyon Flatbottom with partner Terry Jones. We dropped the 500 ci Arias Hemi in the Canyon & ran Pro Gas Flatbottom in SDBA, ADBA & IHBA Associations as Stone Cold namesake. We set the SDBA mph & ET record with the Canyon/Arias combination. In 1996 we parked the 500" Arias Hemi & purchased a 500" aluminum Pontiac. We set numerous mph & ET records with the Stone Cold flatbottom with Pontiac power in PGF class. The Stone Cold PGF was sold the spring of 1999. I drove a couple races in PGF the 2002 season for a friend & hung up my race gear to race my sons & take care of business finances. In 2020 I purchased a Canyon flatbottom to restore along with a 500 ci Mopar Hemi for the Pro Comp Flatbottom class. I sold the Canyon flat after restoring it, & sold the Mopar Hemi. In 2022 I purchased our original 1987 Mako Flatbottom Tuff Toy with a 510 ci BBC & raced the Pro Comp Flatbottom class in Kentucky Drag Boat Association(KDBA). I sold the Mako/Chevy combo, & bought a Canyon flatbottom with a 522 ci BBC named Nasty Habit & ran the 2023-2024 seasons. We dropped an aluminum 500 ci Pontiac in the Canyon for the 2025 season, which was are currently running. I was inducted into the Drag Boat Hall of Fame in 2024 at an event in Bakersfield, CA.
